Preventing MSIs: Step 4 - Monitor and evauate effectiveness

Monitor and evaluate

The employer must ensure that a worker to be assigned to work that requires specific measures to control the risk of MSI is trained in the use of those measures.

When deficiencies are identified, the employer must correct the deficiencies right away.

Start with these effective employer practices:

  • At least once a year evaluate the overall effectiveness of the MSI prevention measures to ensure they continue to meet the objective of eliminating or minimizing the risks to workers.
  • Re-evaluate the risk of developing MSIs when processes or equipment in the workplace change.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the measures by:
    • Interviewing workers.
    • Assessing changes in the number and severity of signs and symptoms of MSI.
    • Determining if the number of risk factors or the severity of risk factors has declined.
    • Retaining records to track which workers have been educated on the signs and symptoms and health effects of MSI.
    • Examining first aid records to determine if there has been a reduction in MSIs.
    • Determining the risk of MSIs before and after controls are implemented.
    • Documenting when and what corrective actions were taken for deficiencies that were identified.
