UBC/SHCS team

Background

Workers from the Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS) unit at the University of British Columbia (UBC) identified an opportunity to evaluate the manual handling of appliances in some housing locations on campus.

Risk factor identification and assessment

UBC and SHCS started by determining the workplace factors that may affect risk of injury for workers moving applicances.

Risk factor control

In this case, there was an increased risk of MSI due to the high magnitude of the lifting/lowering forces, awkward postures, and contact stresses that needed to be minimized or eliminated.

Evaluation and conclusion

UBC was able to find an effective solution and continues to look for opportunities in the design stage of future facilities to improve safety.
